Description: This setting is attributed 'T. Clark' in The Congregational Harmonist, where it is marked with a crossed circle, a symbol used in that book to indicate 'originals' (i.e. tunes not previously published).

Words by William Cowper, 1779, Hymn 8 of Book 3, entitled The Shining Light. Clark has amended the first line of Cowper's hymn from "My former hopes are dead."
