Description of contents
The work is described by its title page as 'A Collection of / Original Psalm and Hymn Tunes / Short Anthems and Pieces, / by various Composers / Adapted to the / Psalms and Hymns used in all / Churches, Chapels, &c. / Arranged (and partly Composed) for / One, Two, Three or Four Voices; / With an Accompaniment for the / Piano Forte, Organ, &c. / BY / W. J. White. Author of "Sacred Melodies", &c.'.
The collection consists of 152 items, of which 142 are metrical psalm or hymn tunes, 4 are anthems and 6 are set-pieces (i.e. through-composed settings of metrical texts).
Of the 152 items, 76 are by W. J. White himself: the next most represented composer in the book is A. K. Williams, to whom are attributed 10 items.
Thomas Clark contributed five items to the book (four hymn or psalm tunes and one set-piece). One of Clark's psalm tunes, the setting of Blest who with generous pity glows which appears on p25 of The Sacred Herald under the name 'Lees Court', was also published with the addition of symphonies and an independent instrumental bass on pp7-8 of Clark's own collection A Ninth Set of Psalm Tunes, London: [c1830].
