1  There sings a bird on yonder tree,
If thou wilt, then come!
How charming sounds his voice to me,
If thou wilt, then come!
My flight is onward o'er the Rhine,
And back to seek that love of thine;
If thou wilt, then come!

2  There murmurs too the meadow brook,
If thou wilt, then come!
While flowing, for thy love I look,
If thou wilt, then come!
I join the river, then the main,
Thou seest me now, but ne'er again;
If thou wilt, then come!

3  From out the azure sky there falls,
If thou wilt, then come!
E'en so the fleecy cloudlet calls,
If thou wilt, then come!
On high I sail before the wind,
That I this day thy love may find;
If thou wilt, then come!

4  The sun and moon and stars all say,
If thou wilt, then come!
From heavenly heights, so far away,
If thou wilt, then come!
Yet shall my heart in peace abide,
I reck not, if by all is cried,
If thou wilt, then come!
