A Collection of Hymn Tunes and Anthems (James Leach)
General information
Title: A Collection of Hymn Tunes and Anthems, Composed and Adapted for a Full Choir, by the Late Mr. James Leach, Published for the Benefit of his Widow and Children
Composer – Compiler: James Leach
Description: A Collection of Hymn Tunes and Anthems was the third volume of James Leach's music to be published, and the only one of the three to be published posthumously. The volume appears to have been published shortly after Leach's death on 8 February 1798: its title page describes it as 'published for the benefit of his Widow and Children'. The book was published in London by T. Preston of 97, Strand, and 'to be had of the Widow at Manchester'. It contains 31 pieces, most of which are anthems or set-pieces (through-composed settings of metrical texts). Most of the pieces have figured basses, and some have other independent instrumental accompaniment parts. This was apparently published in twelve "numbers":
