General information

Publication

Thomas Clark's A Fifth Set of Psalm & Hymn Tunes was published for the author by James Peck in around 1809 (the Hymn Tune Index notes that this is the watermark date of the copy cited in the index, at GB-Lbl: B.1170.a.). The work was later reissued by John Whitaker and Co., around 1820.

Description of contents

The collection consists of one anthem and 92 settings of metrical psalm or hymn texts. Of these 92, the Hymn Tune Index classifies 4 as set-pieces (through-composed settings of metrical texts), and 88 as 'tunes', although 6 of these 88 settings include changes of style which might indicate they were only intended to be used with the underlaid text, not with subsequent verses.

The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch. The vocal bass part is figured.
