General Information

Title: Al subir para el empíreo
Composer: José de Torres
Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SSAT
or SSAA
Genre: SacredVillancico

Language: Spanish
Instruments: String ensemble
Published: Not known

Description: A four part villancico with a very high first soprano part. Although the 4th part is described as "tenor" the manuscript uses the alto clef for it. It is within the contralto range and is quite high for a tenor. It is possible, therefore, that the work as a whole was intended for women's voices.

When ascending into heaven the triumphant redeemer creates brillant light in the sky. The earth produces flowers which made up a splendid array. There is nothing greater, there is nothing more beautiful. It shone clearly in the darkness. There is no other such immense power.

The great majesty, supreme deity, ascends today into the sky, showing the divine portent of its triumph, a strong splendor. Nothing so gay was seen in the sacred sky.

His beauty rises in lucid whiteness, a brilliant lantern. It lights up the celestial sphere, a fortress of love, with brilliance. Nothing so gay was seen in the sacred sky.
