General Information

Title: Alleluia: Spiritus Domini
Composer: Nicolle des Celliers de Hesdin

Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: SAATB

Genre: SacredMotet for Pentecost

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published:

Description: Originally attributed to Gombert, this piece is now attributed to Hesdin by Grove Music Online: "Gombert also seems unlikely as the composer of Alleluia spiritus Domini, included in the first edition of a print devoted to his five-voice motets: he does not appear to have played any part in assembling the collection, and the transparent texture of the music, with its frequent antiphonal writing, contrasts sharply with his normal practice. The motet accords stylistically with Hesdin’s more securely attributed compositions, however, so its attribution to him in the Ferrarese print RISM 15397 probably deserves credence."

Alleluia.
Spiritus Domini
replevit orbem terrarum,
venite adoremus eum.
Alleluia.
Hodie completi sunt
dies Pentecostes.
Alleluia.
Hodie Spiritus Sanctus
in igne discipulis apparuit,
et tribuit eis charismatum dona.
Alleluia.

Laudes Deo devotas
dulci voce ac sonora
plebs devota caelo decantat.
Alleluia.
Spiritus Sancti gratia
Apostolis die hodierna
in linguis igneis est infusa.
Paracliti praesentia
emundet nos a peccati macula
pura sibi aptans habitacula.
Alleluia.

English.png English translation

Alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord
has filled the world;
come, let us adore him.
Alleluia.
Today were accomplished
the days of Pentecost.
Alleluia.
Today the Holy Spirit
appeared to the disciples in fire,
and bestowed upon them the gift of gifts.
Alleluia.

Devout praises to God
with a sweet and strong voice
a devout people sings to heaven.
Alleluia.
The grace of the Holy Spirit
has this day been given
to the Apostles in tongues of fire.
May the Comforter by his presence
cleanse us from the stain of sin,
preparing chaste dwellings for himself.
Alleluia.
