French text Alors, je lui répond: "Quant à moi, je ne sais si j'ai l'oeuil chassieux (: maladie des yeux), si j'ai perdu courage, si mes cheveux son noirs, ou si je les ai blancs. Jamais je n'ai appris de regarder mon visage dans le miroir."

English translation Thus I answered him (or her): “As for me, I know not if I am half blind, or if I have lost my nerve, if my hair is black, or if it is white. I never learned to see my face in the mirror.” Translation by Michael Nick
