Description: German lyrics by Eduard von Bauernfeld (1802-1890), Based on a text in English by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), from Two Gentlemen of Verona, Act IV, Scene 2.
Was ist Sylvia, saget an,
Reiz labt wie milde Kindheit;
ihrem Aug' eilt Amor zu,
dort heilt er seine Blindheit
und verweilt in süßer Ruh.
Darum Sylvia, tön, o Sang,
der holden Sylvia Ehren;
jeden Reiz besiegt sie lang,
den Erde kann gewähren:
Kränze ihr und Saitenklang!
English translation
Who is Sylvia? What is she,
That all our swains commend her?
Holy, fair and wise is she;
The heavens such grace did lend her,
That she might admiréd be.
Is she kind as she is fair?
For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair,
To help him of his blindness,
And being helped, inhabits there.
Then to Sylvia let us sing,
That Sylvia is excelling;
She excels each mortal thing
Upon the dull earth dwelling;
To her let us garlands bring.
Italian translation
Chi è mai Sylvia che i pastori
vanno a gara ad esaltarla?
É bella, santa e saggia,
il cielo la adornò di tante grazie
che può ben essere ammirata.
E' gentile quanto bella?
Perché la bellezza vive con la gentilezza.
L'amore si rifugia nei suoi occhi
per guarire dalla sua cecità
e guarito vi dimora.
Quindi cantiamo a Sylvia
che Sylvia supera ogni cosa.
Supera ogni cosa mortale
sulla grigia dimora terrestre.
Portiamole ghirlande!
Dutch translation
Wie is Silvia, waarvandaan
Dat iedereen haar lofprijst?
Mooi en lief komt zij daar aan.
Op gunst van 't hemels hof wijst
Dat men haar vereert spontaan.
Is zij mooi en ook nog goed?
Zoiets kweekt welgezindheid;
Wij willen Silvia eren,
Ieder schepsel overtreft zij;
Zij moet wel triomferen.
Roem voor haar, dat brengen wij!
