Biography

Anton Foerster was a Slovenian composer of Czech nationality.

In Prague studied law and music, among others at famous composer Bedřich Smetana. Between 1865 and 1867 he was conducting a choir at Senj cathedral, Then he got a job in Ljubljana where he was working as a conducter of drama association (1868–1909). Foerster in one of most important Slovenian Romantic composers in second half of the 19th century. He is famous for today popular opera Gorenjski slavček which was at frst an operetta transformed into opera in 1895.

He is uncle of Josef Bohuslav Foerster.
