An Antiphon is a musical setting of sacred words, usually of short duration, and usually in either plainsong or polyphony, intended to be sung by a choir during the canonical hours. The term is also used for certain musical items used in Processions, and sometimes also refers to the four items sung in honor of Mary. Originally in Latin, many antiphons have been translated to other languages, and have been used as the setting of motets and other choral material.
