Renaming subcategories

This is a great idea; particularly for matching Magnificat antiphons with Magnificats. I think the category names though had better be as simple as practical, either English: Works in mode 8 or Latin: Viii . Richard Mix (talk) 01:35, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

I'll defer to you on the best names for the categories. Tonus is clearly better than modus. I do think it is useful to have the fuller modal name in parentheses afterwards Works in mode 1 (Dorian) or I toni (Dorian). Actually the Latin numbers standing alone don't make for good category names, IMHO. --StJohnsAnnapolis (talk) 20:08, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
I don't like the parentheses because categories don't redirect and it's more redundant stuff to remember when adding or even searching for the category: for a cautionary example try guessing which of these will be blue: LM, 88 88, 88.88, 88. 88, 88. 88 (long meter), 88. 88 (Long metre), 88. 88 (Long meter), 88. 88 (long metre), 88. 88 (LM), 88. 88 (L. M.), 88 88 (long meter), 88 88 (Long metre) … … … … (the winner, without the space).
I'm leaning towards English just to avoid inflections like toni/tonus. "Works in …" is a convention, but maybe not a useful one here. Richard Mix (talk) 21:42, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
How about "Works in mode 8" and that category would itself be in a category such as "Works in Hypomixolydian mode" or "Works in Mixolydian mode", depending on how we want it to align with modern mode naming conventions?--StJohnsAnnapolis (talk) 20:13, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
A parent category should have more than one member: what would Works in Hypomixolydian mode include? The Category:Mode 8 page would include a short description with the term Hypomixolydian and could be found via search. Richard Mix (talk) 04:25, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
What you are saying makes sense. I'm putting the categories for the plagal modes like Hypodorian or Hypomixolydian into the Categories like "Works in Dorian" or "Works in Mixolydian", so in the "Works in Mixolydian" category you would see two subcategories "Works in mode 7" and "Works in mode 8". I think that corresponds to the way medieval modes fit into the modern systems, but I am no expert.--StJohnsAnnapolis (talk) 19:39, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
