Latin text
De profundis clamavi ad te, Deus,
exaudi vocem meam,
& aures tuae sint meae intentae,
precationi, quae est afflicti,
nam si iniquitates observares Deus,
ad faciem tuam tremendam,
quisnam consisteret?
Sed quis nocebit
si gratia tua dignum putabis?
In te, o Domine, anima mea se sustentavit,
in te semper speravit,
sic Israel in te spem omnem ponat,
misericordiam abs te sic impetrabit,
o Deus Israel.
Qui sperat in te,
hunc liberas ex omnibus adversis.
Original text and translations may be found at Psalm 130.
N.B. This setting's text bears only a passing resemblance to that psalm, the source text having been paraphrased and cast in sonnet form by Francesco Bembo (1544-1699): there is also a contemporary translation of that sonnet in English, even more tenuously linked to a verbatim translation of the source text.
