German text
Der Winter kalt ist vor dem Haus,
wo soll ich Armer aus?
In diesem Strauß
tu ich doch nicht erschreckken.
Es kommt die liebe Zeit,
darauf ich harr und beit
gar mit fröhlichem Mut;
es ist der liebe Maienschein,
der mich erfreuen tut.
English translation a rather free (but scanning) translation
- Cold winter stretches out before the house;
- So how shall I, poor being, venture forth?
- But let me not affrighted cow’r within:
- Take courage, quiv’ring soul, and seek the warmth
- That shining May will bring to me e’relong,
- Rejoicing in the sunshine of the spring.
