Edition notes: The clefs for the outer voices would have been C4 and G2. These imply a downward transposition of a 5th. An upward transposition of a tone has been added in respect of the pitch change, giving parts in standard ranges for two means, two altos and two basses. The alto parts are here set out for high tenors. The Alto 2 part has had to be editorially reconstructed. The doubled major thirds at the end of each half are created by this part. Their exotic sound fits the intense feeling generated by the piece, but those who consider them unlikely can substitute low E in both places.

Description: This is a member of a distinguished group of psalm motets starting with Taverner's Quemadmodum (scores on IMSLP) and extending to Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands. The bipartite structure of the Taverner is explained by the two verses that are set, but the rationale disappears for successive members of the group.
