En espérant je viz en grand langueur,
en languissant, je meurs de desplaisir.
Car en t'aymant, on a de toy rigueur.
Et qui te hayt, de toy reçoit plaisir.
Ainsy convient pour le meilleur choisir:
que je te haye en faisant mon debvoir,
et sans toy aucune amour avoir,
pour estre aymé et vivre à mon désir.

Car en t'aimant, on a de toi sévérité.
Et celui qui te hais reçois de toi plaisir.
Ainsi, il convient de choisir le meilleur:
que je te hais en faisant mon devoir,

pour être aimé et vivre à mon désir.

English translation

While hoping, I in endless languor pine,
While pining, from despair I wait to die.
If I show love, you are to me malign,
