German text
Es ist ein Schnee gefallen,
wann es ist noch nit Zeit,
man wirft mich mit den Ballen,
der Weg ist mir verschneit,
Mein Haus hat keinen Giebel,
es ist mir worden alt,
zerbrochen sind die Riegel,
mein Stüblein ist mir kalt,
Ach, Lieb, lass dichs erbarmen,
dass ich so elend bin,
und schleuss mich in dein Arme,
so fährt der Winter hin!
English translation
(Poetic)
This Evenfall 'tis snowing,
Long ere the frost is due;
With icy breath a-blowing,
Does Winter whistle through;
My chimney does but sputter,
It grows exceeding old;
Unfastened every shutter,
My tiny room so cold;
Ah, love, does it not grieve you,
That I so wretched be?
Then hold me in your arms, dear,
Let Winter fly from me!
(Literal)
This evening, snow has fallen,
Before it was its time;
They throw snow balls at me,
The path is covered with snow;
My house has no gable,
It has become very old;
The bars/latches (on the windows) are broken,
It is cold in my little room;
Ah, love, have mercy on me,
For I am miserable,
And hold me in your arms,
And thus we'll pass the Winter!
