French.png French text

Faulte d'argent c'est douleur non pareille,
si je le dis icy bien raison pourquoy, si je le dis las,
je scay bien pourquoy, sans de quibus,
il s'en fault tenir quoy,
femme qui dort pour argent on l'esveille.

English.png English translation by Mick Swithinbank

With empty purses, furrowed brows
Must be our lot, and this is why:
We penniless, ignored, must sigh;
A sleeping woman they will rouse
If you have the means to buy.

Translator's note: This rather blunt variant of the French text seems to have more unpleasant overtones than the one set by Josquin, which at least merely suggests that a sleeping woman will awake spontaneously in response to money.
