Gaetano Donizetti was born in Bergamo, studying with Simon Mayr in Bologna and establishing himself in Naples in 1822 and in Paris in 1838. He wrote 71 known operas (not all of which survive), sacred music, chamber & orchestral music, duets and songs. The 3 collections of songs listed below hint at some favorite workplaces.
His older brother Giuseppe Donizetti (1788 – 1856) spent a career in Istanbul writing military marches.
