Biography:

Born Georg Friedrich Händel (Haendel on typewriters without ä), he adopted the phonetic spelling Hendel in Italy around 1707. In 1727 he petitioned for British citizenship under the name George Frideric Handel and this has been recently adopted by major reference works like Baker's and New Grove.
