O sasso amato tanto, amaro tanto,

Deh' prendi i miei sospiri e questi baci,
Prendi, ch'io bagno di doglioso umore.
E dagli tu poich' io non posso, almeno,
All' amate reliquie, c'hai nel seno.
All'hor sarò dentr'al tuo grembo accolto.
Faccian l'anime amiche in Ciel soggiorno:

{{Translation|English|
Having reached the tomb, where heaven prescribed
the sorrowful prison of her ardent spirit,
his face deprived of color, warmth and movement,
already of cold marble, he gazed on its marble.
At last, giving forth a stream of tears,
he uttered afaint "alas" and said;
"O stone most beloved, most bitter, that
holds within my flames and without my weeping;
Shelter not of death, but of living ashes,
where Love is hidden, I feel from within
your coldness the well-known flames,
less sweet, it is true, but no less warm to my heart.
Pray take my sighs, and these kisses which I bathe
with sad moisture, and at least you give them,
since I cannot, to the beloved remains that you have
within your breast.
You give them, so that if ever
this fair soul should look upon her fair remains,
she will not scorn your pity and my daring,
for there above one does not reap hate or scorn.
Let her forgive my fault; my heart breathes
in this hope alone amongst so many sorrows.
She knows that only my hand is impious, and it does
not displease her that, if I lived loving her, I loving die.

And loving I will die: O happy day
when it be, but far happier,
if as I now wander about you,
then I will be gathered into your bosom.
May loving souls dwell in heaven:
let one and the other spirit lie in one tomb,
so that what life does not have, death may have.
O (if hoping should allow it) noble fate!"
