Editor: Mark Liversidge (submitted 2014-03-08).   Score information: A4, 6 pages, 79 kB   Copyright: Public Domain
Edition notes: Text is taken from the Thomas Cotterill version of Charles Wesley's original. Since the alleluias were not added until 1852, after both Wesley and Cotterill, my version contains one alleluia at the end of each verse, rather than the now more traditional one per line.

Original text and translations

Hail the day that sees Him rise,
To His throne above the skies,
Christ the lamb for sinners given,
Enters now his highest heaven!
Alleluia!

There for him high triumph waits,
Lift your heads, eternal gates,
He has conquered death and sin,
Take the King of glory in!
Alleluia!

Circled round with angel powers,
Their triumphant Lord, and ours,
Wide unfold the radiant scene,
Take the King of glory in!
Alleluia!

Lo, the heav'n its Lord receives,
Yet He loves the earth He leaves,
Though returning to His throne,
Calls the human race His own.
Alleluia!

See, he lifts His hands above,
See, he shows the prints of love,
Hark! His gracious lips bestow,
Blessings on His church below.
Alleluia!

Still for us he intercedes,
His prevailing death he pleads,
Near Himself prepares our place,
Be the first fruits of our race.
Alleluia!

Lord, though parted from our sight,
Far above the starry height,
Grant our hearts may thither rise,
Seeking Thee above the skies.
Alleluia!

Ever upward let us move,
Wafted on the wings of love,
Looking when our Lord shall come,
Longing, sighing after home.
Alleluia!
