Description: A setting of the first six verses of Psalm 55. I have sought to depict the psalmist as someone oppressed by enemies and in fear of his life. His reference to the dove is not to a symbol of gentleness and comfort, but is a cry of despair and anguish. (Later in the psalm his faith in God cheers him up.) I have described the piece as a 'concert anthem' only because its deliberately unrelenting dark and troubled mood might be difficult to place in modern church services. However, I certainly would not wish to preclude such a performance should a suitable occasion arise.
