<poem>God disdains not the little country church,
its coarser incense and the sound of untrained voices,
the prayers of poor farmers, of labourers and maidservants,
or the scant flowers picked in the meadow,
the humbly bowed head between calloused hands,
and the Ave Maria from a devout, innocent heart.
Lord, stamp out from my heart all proud thoughts,
the tares that mingle with the most copious of harvests,
and give me the faith, the hope and the warm love
of those who bear privation without complaint,
submissive and devout; behold my heart, behold my mind,
my head and all its ruminations, and my hand which wrote this...
in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

O, verdelg in mijn hart alle trotse gedachten.
deemoedig vroom, ziehier mijn hart, ziehier mijn geest,

God disdains not the little country church,
its coarser incense and the sound of untrained voices,
the prayers of poor farmers, of labourers and maidservants,
or the scant flowers picked in the meadow,
the humbly bowed head between calloused hands,
and the Ave Maria from a devout, innocent heart.
