Ingiustissim'amor, perche si raro
corrispondenti fai nostri desire
onde perfid'advien che t'e si caro
et discorde voler ch'in dui cor miri
non mi lassi al facil giad'e chiaro
et nel più cieco et maggior fondo tiri,
da chi desia'l mi' amor tu mi richiami,
et chi m'ha in odio vuoi ch'adori et ami.

English.png English translation

Injurious love, why still to mar accord
Between desires has been thy favourite feat?
Why does it please thee so, perfidious lord,
Two hearts should with a different measure beat?
Thou wilt not let me take the certain ford,
Dragging me where the stream is deep and fleet.
Her I abandon who my love desires,
While she who hates, respect and love inspires.

Translated by William Rose (1775-1843)
