Biography
José Tomás Uruñuela was a Basque musician and dance teacher. He was born in Vitoria and in 1916 graduated in Chemistry at the Universidad Central, in Madrid. He returned to his hometown and in 1919 was nominated counselor of the Escuela de Artes y Oficios.

His musical interest brought him in contact with other Basque musicians and musicologists of the time, as Father Donostia. By 1926 a couple of his compositions began to be published, with lyrics in Basque and some based on traditional melodies, to which he created skillfull harmonizations. In 1928 and 1929 he presented his compositions Aizta txinkurrun, Jorrai dantza, Los caballeritos de Azkoitia, and El clavecín de Bendaña, this latter dedicated to Father Donostia.

In June 1937, with the fall of Bilbao during the Spanish Civil War, he decided to go into exile in Paris, where he continued working with groups of traditional Basque dances, particularly Eresoinka, with whom he travelled the whole Europe and North America.

He returned in 1942 and settled in San Sebastián, where he dedicated to the Dance School and to the Schola Cantorum. He also resumed the activity of collecting traditional folk melodies.
