1. No songs of triumph now be sung,
Cease all your sprightly airs;
Let sorrow silence every tongue,
And joy dissolve to tears.

2. See where fortunately for us,
Our bleeding Savior nailed!
Ah see, while death he suffers thus,
How much our sins prevailed.

3. Ah! think what agonies he felt,
How vast the weight he bore!
And let your souls in weeping melt,
And bleed at every pore.

4. If at this sight we don’t repent,
What other sight can move?
Ungrateful should we not relent,
And pay such love, with love?

5. If still contrition is forgot,
And we our sins retain;
As far as it concerns our lot,
He yet but died in vain.

From Gleave, J. 1806. A Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs upon Several Occasions: For the Use of St. John’s Church, Manchester. Manchester, (England): S. Russell. “Sold by J. Gleave, Bookseller.”
