Original text and translations

English.png English text

Lay a garland on her hearse
of (the) dismal yew.
Maidens, willow branches wear,
say she died true.
Her love was false, but she was firm
(from her hour of birth.)
Upon her buried body lie
lightly, thou gentle earth.
Francis Beaumont (ca. 1584-1616)
John Fletcher (1579-1625)

note: The words inside the brackets belong to the original poem by Beaumont and Fletcher, but have been left out in the composition. The word "thou" in the last line has been added in the composition.

German.png German translation

Legt den Kranz von dunkler Eibe
sachte auf ihr Grab;
Weidenzweige bringt, ihr Mädchen,
sagt, wie treu sie starb.
Untreu war ihr Lieb, doch sie war
aufrecht immerzu.
Ihren Leib, o Erde, bette
sanft zur ew'gen Ruh.
