English text
Silent lay the sapphire ocean,
Till a tempest came to wake
All its roaring, seething billows
That upon earth's ramparts break.
Quiet was my heart within me,
Till your image, suddenly
Rising there, awoke a tumult
Wilder than the storm at sea.
inspired by a Russian poem written by Apollon N. Majkov (1821-1897)
German translation
Die saphirne See lag schweigend,
bis ein Sturm mit wilder Hand
Gischten türmte, die mit Brüllen
bersten an der Klippen Wand.
In mir schwieg mein Herze stille,
bis dein Bild mit flammend Glut
ein Verlangen drin entfachte,
wilder als des Sturmes Wut.
