Latin text 1. Magne Joseph, fili David, custos date Virginis, quem et Virgo nuncupavit patrem Christi Domini; Qui fidelis servus Dei datus es Familiae, precor velis curam mei tamquam Pater gerere. 2. Cum ferentem castam Matrem, conspexisses uterum, et nescires tamen Patrem, cor gerebas anxium; Sed de coelo mox instructus, posuisti dubium. Fac ut omnis meus luctus transeat in gaudium. 3. Dum in Bethlehem profecturus, pergeres cum Virgine, Deus nobis par futurus, natus est in tempore. Quem in faeno collocatum, coluisti graviter: nunc in coelo elevatum: ora pro me iugiter. 4. Vim Herodis evasisti, monitus ab Angelo, in Aegyptum cum duxisti Virginem cum parvulo. Per moerorem, quem tulisti, isto in exilio, cum gravabor hora tristis mihi sis auxilio. 5. Ex Aegypto cum defessus, Galilaeam peteres, es in Nazareth digressus, ut securus degeres. In florentis hortum mentis, amas Iesum ducere: da, florescat et mitescat, hortus meae animae. 6. Quam dolebas, cum quaerebas, duodennem Iesulum! Sed inventus et retentus, auxit illi gaudium. Iesu, Lumen oculorum, fac me numquam perdere: semper puritate morum, menti adsit integrae. 7. Inter Iesu et Mariae manus integerrimas, spiritum emittis pie, hinc ad sedes superas. Eia Iesu et Maria, te coniunge tertium, quando me suprema die mors citabit anxium.

English translation 1. Great Joseph, son of David, made guardian of the Virgin, declared by her to be father of Christ the Lord; faithful servant, allowed to be one of God's Family, show me likewise, I beseech you, a Father's care. 2. When you saw the chaste Mother with laden womb, your heart, not yet knowing the Father, was wracked with worry; yet soon, by heaven enlightened, you overcame your doubt. Make all my sorrow turn to joy. 3. As, journeying long to Bethlehem, with the Virgin you pressed on, and time came for Him who would be God for us to have his birth, and, laid in a manger, you worshipped him reverently: now, raised to heaven: pray for me unceasingly. 4. Warned by the angel, you escaped Herod's violence, when you led the Virgin into Egypt with the child: Through the grief you suffered in that exile be my aid in sorrow's hour. 5. When, exhausted, out of Egypt you set your course for Galilee, to Nazareth you turned aside, so that you might live in safety. You delighted to lead Jesus into the garden of a mind in blossom: grant that the garden of my soul may blossom and ripen. 6. How you grieved, when you sought the twelve year old Jesus! Yet, having found and held him fast, your joy in him increased. Jesus, Light of our eyes, may you never lose me: ever purify my ways, that you may find a place in my simple heart. 7. Held in the perfect hands of Jesus and Mary, faithful, you breathed your last, entering the courts above. Ah, join as a third one with Jesus and Mary, when in my fear death calls me on that final day.   Translation by Philip Krinks
