Biography

Mariano Garau was born in Iglesias, South Sardinia. He began to study music at an early age, under the supervision of the composer Pietro Allori; eventually he acquired a deeper knowledge in harmony and counterpoint with Maestro Rodolfo Cicionesi in Florence. He graduated in Music teaching with a close reference to Kodaly and Goitre methodologies. Mariano Garau has committed himself into studying Gregorian songs and Renaissance vocal music for over thirty years. He has directed many choirs and is the founder and director of Cappella Musicale "Pietro Allori" ensemble. He has composed ten messes and more than three hundred motets; a collection of his sacred songs was issued in 1998. In 1999 he won the first prize at the international contest Anno Santo del Duemila and the second prize at the "Luigi Pirandello" international award in Rome. Recently, Maestro Mariano Garau was awarded with the renowned Una vita per la musica prize by the association "Avvenire d'Abruzzo" and with the first international prize Frontiere Letterarie. The most important Italian choirs currently perform many of his compositions.
