Sweet night her veil is spreading,
Soft and dark, o'er the hills;
With noiseless footstep treading,
Every valley she fills.
Low-whispering leaflets greet her,
And taste her balmy breath;
Forth steal the stars to meet
Still brightening on their path.
Weary toilers are sleeping,
In its nest hushed is every bird;
Nought but brooks downward leaping
Through all the land is heard.
Waveless the lake is gleaming,
Mirror of the moon's silver light,
Light that purely is beaming,
Joy of the silent night.
But now hear we a shiver
As of branches swept by a breeze;
Flowers in sleep seem to quiver
'Neath their protecting trees.
There creeps gently a glimmer
Of light over mountain and vale;
The shrinking stars grow dimmer,
The fading moon more pale.
See, rosy rays are breaking
Through the wreathing mists of the morn;
The tuneful birds are waking,
To welcome day new-born.
