Italian.png Italian text

Non rumor di tamburi o suon di trombe
furon principio all'amoroso assalto,
ma baci ch'imitavan le colombe,
davan segno or di gire, or di fare alto.
Usammo altr'arme che saette o frombe.
Io senza scale in su la rocca salto
e lo stendardo piantovi di botto,
e la nimica mia mi caccio sotto.

Ariosto, Orlando furioso, canto 25 ottava 68.
English.png English translation

No roll of drums, no peal of trumpets
Heralded the amorous assault
But caresses like the billing of doves
Gave the signal to advance or to stand firm.
We used arms other than arrows or catapults;
I, without ladder, leapt onto the battlements
And planted my standard there at one jab,
And threw my enemy beneath me.
