Non si levava ancor l'alba novella
né spiegavan le piume
gli augelli al novo lume,
ma fiammeggiava l'amorosa stella,
quando i duo vaghi, e leggiadretti amanti,
ch'una felice notte aggiunse insieme,
come Acanto si volge in vari giri,
divise il novo raggio; e i dolci pianti
nell'accoglienze estreme,
mescolavan con baci e con sospiri
mille ardenti pensier, mille desiri.
Mille voglie non paghe,
in quelle luci vaghe,
scopria quest'alma innamorata, e quella.

E dicea l’una sospirand’allora:
anima, a dio, con languide parole.
E l’altra: vita, a dio, le rispondea,
a dio, rimanti.
e gl’occhi scintillar come facella
e come d’alma che si part’e svella,
fu la partenza loro:
a dio che part’e moro,
dolce languir, dolce partita e fella.

Dawn had not yet risen,
nor had birds stretched their wings
to the new sun,
but the loving star was still alight
when the two fair and graceful lovers,
whom a merry night had joined together
in as many twists and turns as an Acanthus,
were separated by the new light; sweet cries
in the final embraces
mixed with kisses and sighs,
a thousand burning thoughts, a thousand yearnings.
A thousand unfulfilled desires
did find each loving soul
in the other's beautiful eyes.

And one said, sighing with languid words:
«Good-bye, my soul».
And the other answered: «My life, good-bye.»
«Good-bye, no, stay!» And they would not leave
before the new sun.
And before dawn, which rose in the sky,
each saw
the most beatiful roses
pale on loving lips,
and eyes shimmer like small flames.
And their parting was that of souls
which are cut up and uprooted:
«Good-bye, for I leave, and die.»
Sweet languor, and melancholic departure.

La nouvelle aube ne se levait encore,
ni les oiseaux étendaient leurs plumes
aux nouveaux rayons du soleil,
mais l'étoile amoureuse flamboyait toujours
lorsque les deux amants, beaux et gracieux,
qu'une nuit heureuse joignit
sépara la lumière du nouveau jour;

Douce langueur, doux et mélancolique départ.

Nezrodil se ještě nový úsvit
a ptáci nečechrali
svá pírka v ranním světle.
Ještě svítila hvězda milenců,
když dva mladé a bezstarostné láskou,
To vše vypsala dvě milující srdce
do protnuvších se pohledů.

Pak jedno srdce ke druhému vzdychlo:
“Sbohem, duše má” s horou mučivých slov
A to druhé, “sbohem, můj živote”, odpovědělo.
“Sbohem, …..zůstaň ještě!” A nemohli se rozloučit
ještě když nové slunce vzplálo,
a když už úsvit celá nebesa naplnil,
