Non si levava ancor l'alba novella
né spiegavan le piume
gli augelli al novo lume,
ma fiammeggiava l'amorosa stella,
quando i duo vaghi, e leggiadretti amanti,
ch'una felice notte aggiunse insieme,
come Acanto si volge in vari giri,
divise il novo raggio; e i dolci pianti
nell'accoglienze estreme,
mescolavan con baci e con sospiri
mille ardenti pensier, mille desiri.
Mille voglie non paghe,
in quelle luci vaghe,
scopria quest'alma innamorata, e quella.
English translation
Dawn had not yet risen,
nor had birds stretched their wings
to the new sun,
but the loving star was still alight
when the two fair and graceful lovers,
whom a merry night had joined together
in as many twists and turns as an Acanthus,
were separated by the new light; sweet cries
in the final embraces
mixed with kisses and sighs,
a thousand burning thoughts, a thousand yearnings.
A thousand unfulfilled desires
did find each loving soul
in the other's beautiful eyes.
French translation
La nouvelle aube ne se levait encore,
ni les oiseaux étendaient leurs plumes
aux nouveaux rayons du soleil,
mais l'étoile amoureuse flamboyait toujours
lorsque les deux amants, beaux et gracieux,
qu'une nuit heureuse joigna, comme Acanthe,
en mille tours et retours,
sépara la lumière du nouveau jour;
les douces plaintes, dans les caresses extrêmes,
se mélaient avec baisers et soupirs,
avec milles pensées ardentes, mille désirs.
Mille envies non rasassiées
découvra chaque âme amoureuse
dans les beaux yeux de l'autre.
