ON THE DEATH OF A CHILD IN TIME OF WAR

Sleep, dearest,
great warriors lie with you,
Whole peoples drift loose about you.
How should we stand firm
when so many firm have gone before,
and the same vast currents flow about us?

Sleep safely. We pitiless, we
remain, gazing where we were:
before wisdom, in age old
half standing, silent above
the screams of the ages, blind
children, folded as when we came.

WILLIAM WALLIS
