- ululate, pastores, in cinere et cilicio
- quia veniet dies Domini magna et amara valde.
- Versus: Accingite vos, sacerdotes, et plangite, ministri altaris,
- aspergite vos cinere.

- Klage wie eine Jungfrau, mein Volk,
- heult, ihr Hirten, in Asche und im härenen Gewand,
- denn es wird kommen der Tag des Herrn, der große und sehr bittere Tag.
- Vers: Gürtet euch, ihr Priester, und klagt, ihr Diener des Altars,
- bestreut euch mit Asche.

Weep like a virgin, my people,
howl, keepers of the flock, covered with ashes and wearing hair-shirts,
for the great and very bitter day of the Lord will come.
Versus: Prepare yourselves, priests, and lament,
acolytes before the altar, cover yourselves with ashes.
