He is described in various sources as a gentleman, and received an income from a leased farm called Leycots in Kennerleigh. He was resident in Kennerleigh at the time of the publication of his book, Sacred Music, in 1835, and comments in the preface of the book that he had 'laboured under the loss of sight for thirty years'.
