Description: A Christian interpretation of Isaiah 11:1-2, this Marian motet was published by Gardano in 1538.

Original text and translations

Latin text Stirps Jésse vírgam prodúxit, vírgaque flórem. Et súper hunc flórem requiéscit spíritus álmus. Vírgo Déi génitrix vírga est; flos, fílius éius. Et súper hunc flórem requiéscit spíritus álmus.

English translation The stem of Jesse produced a shoot, and the shoot, a flower. And upon this flower rested a caring spirit. The virgin bearer of God is the shoot; the flower, her son. And upon this flower rested a caring spirit. (John Hetland)

English translation The rod of Jesse brought forth a shoot, and the shoot a flower, and a propitious spirit watches over that flower. The virgin mother of God is the shoot, the flower her son, and a propitious spirit watches over that flower. (used in CPDL 15506)
