Description: First published in Plain Psalmody, 1800, p. 70. Words reportedly adapted from Philip Doddridge, 1755, by William Bentley, 1788, in four stanzas. However, the Hymn Tune Index has this first line going back to 1750, so perhaps the hymn was written by someone else.
