The first line of the inscription in the source in fact reads "Maxima musarum nostrarum gloria White" (variously abbreviated in the different partbooks); the second line is variously punctuated but should probably have a single comma after "peris", as in two of the partbooks, and actually translates as "you perish, but your muse remains eternally" (postponed 'sed').
