Score submission guide

I've just added links to the score submission guide and translations on the right hand column at the suggestion of Joachim on the forums. If anyone has any strong views for/against, let's discuss it here becuase I'm not entirely convinced that the links do belong there... though it is useful for users who can't read any English. --Bobnotts talk 22:45, 14 December 2007 (PST)

Probably some change is in order, because I first thought the links must be to Italian and Dutch versions of the Main Page. Possibly new translations of pages could be simply posted as CPDL news articles for the time being - and/or - (in lieu of a "languages" box at the far left, a section Template:Languages added (above or below CPDL news) with various language links. Since the Score submission guide already has links to the Dutch and Italian versions on the page, I don't think it's necessary to include them in the Main Page where they are now, at least if there is a section on the Main Page about pages/resources in other languages. -- Chucktalk Giffen 23:26, 14 December 2007 (PST)
The Add scores to CPDL link in the navigation box on the left, the Add scores and score submission guide links in the Contribute to CPDL box all point to different pages. It would be better if the pages were merged in to one page (I'm favoring the Score submission guide), with the linked page in the navigation being replaced by a redirect, and the Add scores link in the Contribute to CPDL removed. -- Chucktalk Giffen 23:26, 14 December 2007 (PST)

OK. FIRST to inform myself before writing my opinion, I clicked on the Italian flag, and was taken to the page for the image. Since my experience is that it is a common convention to use the flag as a link to a translated page, I think link needs to be reworked. Second, if we're to go multi-national, I would suggest that the same link method be used for all versions, and the way I would prefer to see this implemented is to have the section of the main page under the heading "Contribute..." be all links, so that the English language version is moved to a new page, too.

Bobnotts added the link to the Dutch version at my request. I don't really have any opinion on what the main page should look like - the main reason for my request is this: if you add translations to accomodate people who do not speak English, then it is rather counterproductive to require them to click trough a bunch of English in order to reach the file in their language. If you really want CPDL to become accessible to people from all sorts of backgrounds (which I gather is the idea, judging by the translation request), then that accessibility should transpire right from the main page. If you turn it around, I wonder how long it would take native English speakers to find the correct information if the site were published in, say, Dutch. Not to mention how eager those few persistent characters would be to subsequentely take on the process of actually publishing a score. In summary: multi-language access means multi-language main page. joachim

MY COMMENTS above are about the details of the way the link is constructed, not about whether or not there should be pages in different translations. This site is adopting the model of Wikipedia, and it seems reasonable to hope that eventually there will be a full complement of pages--main, templates, categories, text & translations, &c. for a number of different languages, and I approve of the addition of the current translations to Dutch and Italian. I would suggest to replace the text "Questa pagina è disponibile anche in italiano" with the text "La guida all'invio di spartiti è disponibile anche in italiano", which means "The score submission guide is also available in Italian". --Choralia 03:40, 17 December 2007 (PST)

Other languages section

I've just reformatted the Main Page to include a section on Other languages, currently placed right below the Browse CPDL section and before the CPDL News section. As other translations of pages become available, they can be added to Template:Other languages and will appear on the Main Page. For the time being, I've included the actual translated page names (as secondary bulleted items). However, when and if the list of these individual translated pages becomes too long the secondary items can be removed, for the primary bulleted items point to translated pages categories for each language (see, for example Category:Italian pages or Category:Dutch pages), where all the translated pages may be found. -- Chucktalk Giffen 02:08, 18 December 2007 (PST)

I think the new structure is an improvement, though, as you mention, transparency might get lost as the list of available languages / pages expands. One small thing, though: I think the links to the translated pages should be in the target language. I agree with Joachim. The equivalent in Italian is: Guida alla pubblicazione degli spartiti. The word Help may be translated as Aiuto, but the English term is also used in Italian so it may be left as it is now. --Choralia 23:55, 18 December 2007 (PST)

Bigger notice about forums being down

I've just added this because I don't think the news item is getting the message across well enough. My reasoning for this is quite simple - I've just replied to an old forum post today. It was posted on 14th March(!!) and I've only just noticed it through a glitch in the system (it wasn't highlighted like new messages normally are).
