The lake lay blue below the hill.
O'er it, as I looked, there flew
Across the waters, cold and still,
A bird whose wings were palest blue.
The sky above was blue at last,
The sky beneath me blue in blue.
A moment, ere the bird had passed,
It caught his image as he flew.

Der See bei dem Hügel war schimmerndes Blau;
Darüber zog friedlich auf luftiger Spur,
weit über die Wasser, die ruhig und flau,
ein Vogel mit Flügeln so blau wie Azur.
Der Himmel darüber war blaues Gewand,
der Himmel darunter blau-spiegelnder Schein;
Für einen Moment, eh' der Vogel entschwand,
fing kurz dessen Abbild im Fluge er ein.
