Italian text
- Vago Augelletto che cantando vai
- Ovver piangendo il tuo tempo passato
- Vedendoti la notte e'l verno a lato
- E'l dì dopo le spalle e i mesi gai.
- Vago Augelletto che cantando vai
- Si come i tuoi gravosi affani sai
- Così sapessi, il mio simile stato,
- Veresti in grembo a questo sconsolato
- A partir seco i dolorosi guai.
- Vago Augelletto che cantando vai.
English translation
- Wandering bird, who goes singing
- Or weeping for your past,
- Seeing night and winter before you
- And day and the happy months behind:
- Wandering bird who goes singing!
- If, since you know your heavy pains,
- You knew also my similar condition,
- You would fly to my unconsoled breast
- To share its sorrowful woes.
- Wandering bird who goes singing.
Text - Petrarch Rime 353
Petrarch's poem is a Sonnet: Monteverdi takes the first line, repeats it before line five and after line 8; he does not set lines 9-14.
