Verbum caro factum est

General Information

Verbum caro factum est (from John 1:14) is used as the final responsory of Christmas Matins, also used for the Annunciation. There is also a Magnificat antiphon for vespers of the Holy Family with a similar text.

Latin text 1:14  Verbum caro factum est Et habitavit in nobis et vidimus gloriam ejus [or cuius gloriam vidimus] gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre plenum gratiae et veritatis. Verse for Christmas Matins 1:3  Omnia per ispum facta sunt et sine ipso factum est nihil. (Liber usualis & Furmanik) 1:1  In principio erat verbum et verbum erat apud Deum et Deus erat verbum (Sheppard) Antiphon Verbum caro factum est Et habitavit in nobis plenum gratiae et veritatis; de cuius plenitudine omnes nos accepimus, et gratiam pro gratia, alleluia.

English translation 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
