Life

Died: 25 January 1829

Biography

William Shield was born in SwalwellLink to the English Wikipedia article, Gateshead. He was predominantly a composer of theatrical music, but also contributed psalm tunes to William Dechair Tattersall's collection Improved Psalmody. He succeeded William Parsons as Master of the King's MusickLink to the English Wikipedia article in 1817, and held the post until his death in 1829. He is buried with Johann Peter SalomonLink to the English Wikipedia article in the south cloisters of Westminster Abbey.
