German text 1.  Wohlauf mit mir auf diesen Plan, ein Tanz will ich euch stellen an! Dabei müßt ihr mir all' erscheinen, ihr tut gleich lachen oder weinen. 2. Macht auf, ihr Geiger, einen Tanz, dem Kaiser bind ich da ein Kranz; eur' Majestät wöll einherprangen, man wird ein Galliard anfangen. 3. Hört zu, ihr König, laß euch sag'n, das Glöcklein hat den Garaus g'schlag'n! Eu'r Hofgesind' laßt steh'n beiseite, tanzt, wie ihr wöllt, Welsch oder Deutsche! 4. Ihr Bauern und ihr Burgersleut; ihr jungen G'sellen, seid bereit: es hilft kein Panzer gegen mich: all's muß zu Boden, was ich triff'. 5. Derhalben läßt's euch sein gesagt: fürcht' euch! Der Tod ist unverzagt. Kein's Menschen Teil er hier verschonet, sei'm Tanz muß alles Fleisch beiwohnen. 6. Das Fleisch mag sein zum Tanz bereit: der Tod die arme Seel' befreit. Sein Bitternis ward ganz zu Schanden, da Christ vom Tod ist auferstanden.

English translation 1. Come all to hear about this plan: A dance for all and with a band! You all will come and join the party; Some laugh, some cry, but none is tardy 2. Now play, you fiddlers, play a tune, we’ll have the emp’ror dancing soon. You're first, Your Majesty. Make haste. They'll play a galliard for you, Your Grace. 3. O king, your turn has come. Join in. the little bell will ring you in! Your servants leave behind the curtain; dance as you will, in French or German! 4. You commoners and city folk and you young people, go for broke. There is no armor can resist; all must join in, for I insist. 5. Let me be clear: take care and fear, for death will not be thwarted here. No man or woman can escape it, for all must dance; do not mistake it. 6. All flesh in time must join the dance, and death may free your soul, perchance. Death’s bitterness to shame is driven, since Christ from death and grave is risen.
