Life

Born:

Died:

Biography He is probably the John Byrchley who was schoolmaster of the Benedictine Abbey of St Werburgh, Chester and who was granted a pension from the Court of Augmentations on its dissolution. After the abbey had been refounded as Chester Cathedral in 1541 Byrchley received payments for playing and mending the “organs” and may have been Master of the Choristers. He is last recorded in 1550. [Watkins Shaw: The Succession of Organists of the Chapel Royal and the Cathedrals of England and Wales from c.1538 (Oxford, 1991), p. 61; John E. West, Cathedral Organists Past and Present (Enlarged Edition, London, 1921), p. 17]
