Italian.png Italian text

O morte, eterno fin di tutt’i mali,
riposo delle membra e della mente,
utile e necessaria a gl’animali
più che la vita assai chi pon ben mente;
porto de’ ciechi e miseri mortali
ch’errando van da l’orto a l’occidente;
tu prigion spezzi e rompi aspre catene,
e metti fine a l’amorose pene.

German.png German translation

Oh Tod, ewiges Ende aller Leiden,
Ruhe der Glieder und des Geists,
nützlich und notwendig den Lebewesen
viel mehr als das Leben, wenn man es recht bedenkt;
Hafen der blinden und armseligen Sterblichen,
die vom Aufgang zum Untergang irren,
du brichst Gefängnisse auf und sprengst harte Ketten,
und setzt ein Ende den Liebesqualen.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt

O death, eternal end of all suffering,
repose for limbs and mind,
helpful and necessary for living creatures
much more than life, if you think about it;
a haven for the blind and miserable mortals,
that go erring from sunrise to sundown,
you breach prisons and break strong chains,
and put an end to pains of love.
