Description: "Schönster Herr Jesu" is a spiritual hymn of the Catholic tradition. It is the prayer of an individual to Jesus Christ and praises his spiritual beauty, which transcends all created things. The author of the text, first printed 1667 in Münster, is unknown, as are the composers of the two melodies from the 17th and 19th centuries. The hymn is included in the most important German-language Catholic and Protestant hymnals in various text versions.

This edition covers the 19th century melody that raised in Silesia, a German province at that time, now located in the south of Poland. The author of the four-part setting also is unknown.

Gottes und Marien Sohn,
dich will ich lieben, dich will ich ehren,
meiner Seele Freud und Kron.

2. Alle die Schönheit Himmels und der Erden
ist gefasst in dir allein.
Keiner soll immer lieber mir werden
als du, liebster Jesu mein.

3. Schön ist der Monde, schöner ist die Sonne,
schön sind auch die Sterne all.
Jesus ist feiner, Jesus ist reiner
als die Engel allzumal.

4. Schön sind die Blumen, schöner sind die Menschen
in der frischen Jugendzeit.
Sie müssen sterben, müssen verderben,
Jesus bleibt in Ewigkeit.

5. Schönster Herr Jesu, bei uns gegenwärtig
durch dein Wort und Sakrament,
Jesu, dich bitt ich: Herr, sei uns gnädig
jetzt und auch am letzten End.
